Sexual Transmitted Infections (STDs/STIs)

What are sexually transmitted diseases/infections?

Sexually transmitted infections are transferred from one person to another through sexual contact (MedicineNet.com).

Types of STDs/STIs

Source: CDC
  • Bacterial Vaginosis (BV)
  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhea
  • Genital Herpes
  • Hepatitis
  • HIV/AIDS
  • HPV
  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
  • Syphilis
  • Trichomoniasis

Side effects:

  • Chlamydia & Gonorrhea (Odor discharge from the penis or vagina; pain or burning when urination)
  • Syphilis (Sores & rashes on or in the mouth, vagina, and anal)
Not all STDs/STIs show symptoms and when they do the infection is taking over your body or causing bodily harm.

Treatment:

Most STDs/STIs can be treated with Antibiotics, penicillin, and/or metronidazole. STDs like genital warts and HIV/AIDS are not curable the virus stays in your body

How are STDs/STIs spread?

  • Body Fluids (Blood, Vaginal Fluids or semen)
  • Contact with infected skin or mucous membranes (Ex. Sores in the mouth)
  • Needle injection
You can be exposed to body fluids and infected skin through vaginal, anal, or oral sex.

Ways to prevent STDs/STIs:

  1. Use Condoms
  2. Limit number of sexual partners to ONE
  3. Get Tested (You and Your Partner)
  4. Avoid drugs & alcohol when engaging in sex
  5. Get the HPV & Hepatitis B vaccinations

  1. I really like how you included many STD's and STI's. It is important to at least be familiar with them, especially because having sex is considered a norm in college. This is a very informative blog and I think many people should be educated on sexual health before having sex.

  2. It's good that you had so many STI's listed because some people might only know of the really well-known ones, & not some of the more rare or less heard of STI's. It's interesting how you might not have any symptoms yet still have an STI.

  3. I liked how you had your information laid out. I think it is good that you included all the different types of STD's and STI's because some people may not know what all of them are or they have heard the word, but don't really know what it is. I think it was also nice that you included the side effects of them. Good post!

  6. Astoria, your post was straight and to the point which I like! Your information was important and it is info that people need to know. I think sexual health education needs to start at a younger age because kids are having sex at younger ages and do not realize the risks.
